Shirley Brooks (1816-1874) was a British journalist, novelist, and playwright known for his witty and satirical writing style. He contributed to several newspapers and magazines throughout his career, including Punch, where he worked for many years as an editor and contributor. Brooks is perhaps best remembered for his works of fiction, which include the novels The Gordian Knot (1860) and Sooner or Later (1868), as well as several plays, such as The Creole (1857) and The Phantom Isle (1862). He was also a friend and collaborator of Charles Dickens, who wrote the preface to Brooks's novel The Silver Cord (1861). Brooks was popular in his day and was considered one of the leading humorists of the Victorian era.
